It's hard to believe it’s August already, but that’s what the calendar is telling us and the calendar doesn’t lie. Before we know it, the Summer of 2016 is going to be over, the kids will be back in school and all of our favorite football teams will be taking the field to start another season.

Fall, however, is also when the festival season really kicks off in southern Delaware - but that’s a story for another day. For this day, we’re going to focus on what’s left of this amazing summer, specifically fun events happening on this first full weekend of August.

And there certainly are a wide variety of fun local happenings scheduled for the next few days at or near the Delaware beaches. And when we say variety, do we ever mean it.

We have running events and car shows and barbecue festivals and art shows, even an event a few miles away from the coast that features vessels made of recycled cardboard floating down one of the most pristine rivers in the United States.

All of our local farmers’ markets are also still in full swing. So be sure to check those out, along with outdoor concerts, food events and everything else coastal Delaware summers are known for.

And if you’re a sports fan, the two Little League World Series events are winding up over the next few days at the Lower Sussex Little League complex in Roxana. It’s definitely a great way to spend an afternoon with your friends and/or family.

And if you can’t make it to the ballpark, you can also catch the games on the ESPN television network. Check your cable or satellite listings for more information.

One last note – we compiled a list last week of some of our favorite new restaurants at the Delaware beaches. Check out that blog entry HERE if you feel like trying some of our great coastal Delaware cuisine.

And, as always, if you're buying or selling a home here at the Delaware beaches, we would love to earn your business. Visit our search page HERE or give us a ring at 302-227-6767.

Now, on with this week’s main event. Here are our choices for weekend events and happenings for the extended weekend of August 5-8:

Outdoor Fine Art Show (August 6-7). This 43rd annual event features 125 artists and will take place at the Rehoboth Art League complex in Henlopen Acres. The show is scheduled for Saturday, August 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, August 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to the arts and crafts, additional activities include food, music, historic tours, face painting and a Dogfish Head beer garden. Nanticoke River Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta (August 6). This wild and wacky, family friendly event centered on and around the Nanticoke River in Seaford is held in coordination with the State of Delaware and features a great way for different organizations to get out and have some fun on the water. Teams build boats made out of recycled cardboard, with the goal of making them float down the river. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t, and that’s really when the fun starts. This is the third year for the event, which will be held this Saturday, August 6, in Seaford. Contact Matt Babbitt at 302-422-0847 or via email at [email protected] for more information.

Dewey Beach 5K Buddy Run (August 7). This annual event in Dewey Beach is this Sunday morning at the Dewey Beach Lions Club facility on McKinley Street. The 5K run benefits Best Buddies Delaware and the Boardwalk Buddy Walk. For more information on this event, visit www.teambestbuddies.org

Movie Night on the Beach (August 8). Held every Monday night during the season, these family friendly movies are fun for everyone. Bring your family, a blanket, and some popcorn to the beach for family movie night! Movies will start at approximately 8:30 p.m. on the beach at Dagsworthy Street in Dewey Beach and Garfield Parkway in Bethany Beach. This week's selections are "Inside Out" (Dewey Beach) and “Zootopia" (Bethany Beach).

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, we hope you have a fun and exciting few days here at the Delaware beaches.
