As we get deeper into the month of April, local happenings and events here in coastal Delaware are really beginning to pop up in earnest. And, as always, the Oldfather Group of Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty aims to keep you abreast of all that’s going on via our “Weekender Blog.”
We hope you enjoy this weekly preview of what’s happening here at the Delaware beaches as much as we love bringing it to you. There’s certainly no shortage of fun and enjoyable events happening here in our little corner of the world, especially as the weather gets warmer and the calendar turns closer to summer.
This weekend features a selection of events as eclectic and varied as the area itself. If you like to exercise and keep in shape, we have one of the biggest running events of the season on tap this weekend. If enjoying music is your thing, have we ever got a fun two-day festival for you as well.
And here’s one we can all enjoy – a festival dedicated to the delectable smell and taste of bacon. Now that’s one you surely don’t want to miss!
This weekend also marks the 13th edition of one of the spring season’s most popular festivals in Milford, as well as THE annual event for those who love to sit peacefully with a pair of binoculars and enjoy area wildlife.
Yes, it’s Delmarva Birding Weekend, which brings scores of bird lovers to coastal Delaware each and every year.
Wow, talk about a wide selection of fun things to do on what we hope will be a beautiful weekend at the Delaware beaches. Let’s look a little closer at each of these fabulous local events:
Coastal Delaware Running Festival (April 22-24): Featuring three races in three days, this is the biggest running event of the year in coastal Delaware, featuring thousands of runners every April. There’s a 9K race, as well as a half marathon and a full marathon for participants to choose from. All courses feature Delaware State Parks, with the main event not only named Delaware’s top marathon by Trip Advisor, but also serving as a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon. Perks for all participants include complimentary post race beer (for those 21 and over), a post race buffet, live entertainment and a finish line beach party. Organizers report that “very limited slots remain for all races,” so if you want to participate, be sure to contact them now, or register online. Learn more at www.codelrun.com.
Dewey Beach PopFest (April 22-23): Now in it’s 14th year, this popular musical festival returns to the Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach for two days of performances by up-and-coming regional bands. This is a free event and rounds out the spring music festivals held in the Delaware resort. Bands from Delaware, Maryland, Florida, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Virginia will be featured over the two days of the event. Visit www.deweybeachfest.com/popfest for more information.
Delmarva Spring Birding Weekend (21-24): If you love wildfowl, then these four days in coastal Delaware are made just for you. This event includes boat trips, paddling treks and expeditions on foot during the spring migration through Delmarva of many different species. Included during the four days of the event are such fun excursions as “Trap Pond Pontoon Owl Search,” “Night Birds of the Marsh,” “Warblermania!” and “Shorebird Explorer.”
The annual "weekend" includes events in both Sussex County, Delaware, and neighboring Worcester County, Maryland. Bug and Bud Festival (April 23): This is one of the highlights of the spring festival season in southern Delaware. Held on the shores of the beautiful Mispillion River in Milford, this family friendly event is highlighted by the always-popular Ladybug and Tree costumed parade, which even allows dressed up pets to be involved in the fun. The festival also features a kayak race on the river, a pizza eating contest, a children’s art show, paddleboat rides, lots of vendors and a performance by the Milford Community Band. If you plan on a day in Milford this Saturday, however, make sure you go early and get a good seat for the parade, which starts at approximately 9:30 a.m. and winds it’s way through downtown Milford. Visit www.downtownmilford.org for more information on this fun springtime event.
Bacon Fest (April 23-24): Okay, now here’s one we call all sink our teeth into – a two-day coastal Delaware festival where eating lots of bacon is pretty much required. Throughout the two days of the event, there will be 24 locations in both Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach participating, with proceeds benefitting SoDel Cares. Beginning Saturday with 12 locations in Dewey Beach and continuing the next day with 12 more locations in Rehoboth, “Bacon Fest” features bacon samples from coastal restaurants, discount offers, event t-shirts and much more. If you plan on attending the event, you can choose from either a VIP pass or general admission. There will also be a competition, with the winner chosen as having the “Best Bacon on the Beach.” And don’t miss the family bonfire on Saturday evening in Dewey Beach.
