Not exactly a fan of the pounding Old Man Winter has unleashed on coastal Delaware in the last few weeks, it was nothing short of a self-proclaimed “dream job” that finally convinced Rehoboth Beach Realtor Sherry Thens to make the Delmarva Peninsula her new home.
The thing is – it wasn’t her dream at all. It was, however, the perfect scenario for her eldest son, Paul, who was offered a position he simply couldn’t refuse a couple of years ago at the Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton.
And when youngest son, Eric, also decided that a move to the Delaware beaches was in the cards, that was all Thens needed to sell her Las Vegas based business and make a move to the Atlantic coast – Ocean City, Md., to be exact.
“I still think that life is best lived in flip flops and shorts, and I’m certainly not a fan of the winter weather. But being able to live at the beach has softened some of the effects of the weather for me,” says Thens, now a Realtor with the Oldfather Group of Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty in Rehoboth Beach. “Once both of my sons decided to move to this area, it was very easy for me to do that as well. We’ve always been a very close-knit family, so it’s good that we can all still live relatively close together.”
A native of the College Park area in Maryland, Thens spent many summers at the Delaware and Maryland beaches before moving to Las Vegas for work in 1996. Eventually transitioning into real estate, she owned her own brokerage in the Nevada desert for several years before Delaware’s largest craft brewery made a job offer to her eldest son.
A self-described “fan” of Dogfish Head, Paul Thens had been teaching at the Art Institute in Las Vegas when he noticed a job posting on the brewery’s Website. It was the very definition of a perfect job for the then 42-year-old.
“If you can find something that you love and also get paid for, well that’s pretty close to euphoria. That’s how Paul feels about Dogfish Head and that’s how I feel about real estate,” says Thens. “He’s getting to market a product that he loves and that he believes in, so he’s very happy about that. And, even though I still don’t like the cold, I’m getting to live at the beach.
“It’s just a good fit for all of us.”
Thens spent most of her working life in the software business, before making the move to real estate in 2002. She obtained her Maryland real estate license after moving to Ocean City in 2014 and later also became licensed to sell properties in Delaware.
She began working for the Oldfather Group in April of 2015.
Says Dustin Oldfather, chief executive of the Oldfather Group: “Sherry brings a tireless work ethic, bright spirit and passion for real estate to our dedicated team of professionals here on the coast. Her vast experience as a broker and owner contributes to all of us, in our desire to give excellent service to our clients in Ocean City and in Delaware.”
The Oldfather Group specializes in real estate sales throughout coastal Delaware, including Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island.
